PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM RECEIVES PRESERVATION AWARD

The Palm Springs Modernism Committee has awarded the Community Enrichment Award to the Palms Springs Art Museum.   The award was given on October 6, 2012 at their annual awards ceremony.  PSModCom presented this award to the art museum because of its efforts to rehabilitate the historic bank building in downtown Palm Springs, which will be converted into the new Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, called the Edwards Harris Pavilion.

The building was acquired by the art museum in June 2011, which is located on Palm Canyon Drive.  It is schedule to be finished in the Spring 2014. When completed it will be the country’s first freestanding architecture and design museum housed in a class 1 historical structure.  The Architecture and Design Center, will transform the 161 E. Stewart Williams designed Santa Fe Federal Saving and Loans in to a museum dedicated to modern architecture and design.  The opening is planned to correspond with the museum’s 75th anniversary festivities.

The Palm Springs Committee also announced that the board of directors will help funded the project by pledging $25,000.  They join a long list of growing founders for the building.  Other honorees to receive the Community Enrichment Award were Palm Springs Art Museum Executive Director, Steven Nash, Architecture and Design Curator Sidney Williams, principal founders Elizabeth Edwards Harris, Trina Turk and Jonathan Skow, and John Baccardo.

"We are honored to receive this award from such a prestigious preservation organization," said Williams, who accepted the award on the museum's behalf. "PS ModCom has a long history of honoring organizations and individuals who have contributed to the preservation of the historic buildings in Palm Springs, so we are thrilled that the group not only recognized our efforts to transform this significant building into a world-class center for architecture and design, but also believes in our vision so much that they have decided to join our circle of Founders."
