Please allow me to introduce myself…I’m … the voice of the Joshua Tree Rock and Roll Preservation Society with ‘bits and pieces’ of local desert music news and trivia. We will ‘voice’ to you the reader, the happy and the sad….the new and the old…and the past and the future news and events concerning our ever changing and constantly growing local desert music scene.
On the happy side, the voice has heard word that Ted Quinn has, after two passive years, written two new songs! We eagerly await the unveiling of his new tunes! Bravo Mr. Ted! On a sad note we will really miss Tara and Grant Young from ‘Missguided’ as they recently relocated to New York. Hoping to hear them soon! We also mourn the loss of a favorite local player Albert Williams of ‘Alice and Albert’ on May 13. Our thoughts and love be with you Alice…
On the new note, the voice hears there may be something happening at the old Beatnik Café location. We are being instructed to ‘stay tuned’ as the Red Arrow Gallery sign indicates…Hmmmm…RFJT?
Old nusic notes include some of the performances recently enjoyed at the various ‘open mike’ nights in our desert land. At the Joshua Tree Saloon on May 7 we heard the ‘Zuulu Band’ with its very lovely back-up singers. The Salooney Bin Band featuring Ted Quinn(vocals/guitar) Mike McCauley(keys) Thom Merrick(bass) Leslie Mariah Andrews(drums) newcomer Mike Wilcox(lead guitar) rounded out the rest of the night with a great set of the Rolling Stones!
Moving on to past but not forgotten events, JT Trailer Trash, a new outdoor venue in downtown Joshua Tree, hosted music events on the second Friday 5-10 p.m. of each month, and will continue to do so year round. The events consist of the finest local musicians coming onstage to perform five hours of ‘themed’ music. The April event theme was ‘The Beatle BBQ,’ with all Beatles and a BBQ to boot! May’s theme was "Corn on the Cob with Bob," with a night of Bob Dylan tunes and ,of course, corn on the cob and ice cream cones! The really cool part of these events is there is no cost to come listen and chow down! June 14 will be ‘Sticks and Stones.’ Lots of fun, talented musicians and food!
Of course our desert has future events too, like Wanda Jackson on June 29 and Conor Oberst on October 10, at the wonderful Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace.
Since we really don’t get out much, here is where the ‘voice’ needs some back-up vocals. We’d like you, the reader, to help contribute to ‘ Bits and Pieces’ by emailing any news about our local music scene you want to share with the ‘voice’ and in turn we’ll share it here. We want the happy or sad, the new or old, and the past or future tidbits or events that interest you.
And by the way, a prize to the first person to email us as to the source of the name ‘Bits and Pieces’ and the source of the introductory sentence in quotes at the beginning of this article. If you guess it, you’ll win a great musical surprise! So email us at email@example.com!
Hear the ‘voice’ again soon!
