Basin Trivia by Pat Rimmington
Spring
2004

I once read that you were never wasting time if you were reading.  Winter with its cold days and long nights was a perfect time to catch up reading the magazines, which have piled up, as well as taking in some of the “best sellers”.  The magazines are, of course, now out of date and therefore I have missed the time to prepare the meals of the season, buy the “in” gifts, attend interesting exhibits, and sign up for exotic vacations – which I would probably not want to go on even if I had all the money in the world.  I consoled myself with the fact that even if these publications are out of date, at least they are not as old as the ones in the doctor’s office.

Now on to the books. Since I was a child I have always read a book from start to finish. This probably stems from school days when I feared that the teacher might probably test me by asking a question related to an event, which occurred near the end of the story. It is only in the past years that I have come to realize that ploughing through umpteen pages of ‘literature’ that is not holding my attention really is a waste of time. This is especially true when you discover that you are, in fact, ‘reading’ through closed eyelids. My mother said that this is something OLD people do!

I enjoyed being indoors listening to the rain patter on the roof, cheered by the thought that the welcome moisture would help make the desert bloom.  I could look forward to seeing the myriad of flowers, some so small that a magnifying glass is needed.

The skies cleared, the sun shone, and the truth dawned. I had made a serious error. I should have worked in the garden trimming and fertilizing. Should I try to do it now or will I kill the new growth that is pushing up? The packages of seeds that I had bought should have been put in the ground in January. Should I try to plant them now? I can’t do anything about the trees I meant to prune. I should have done that weeks ago but now the birds are starting to build nests and I can’t possibly disturb them.

I stared in horror at my garden walls, which are made of adobe.  Admittedly it has been several years since I last did any work on them but the days of steady rain have caused large chunks to fall off. The hard work of repairing them will have to be done. I should have been getting the body in tune for this task by exercising instead of perusing the print. The sun shining through the dirty windows of my home is illuminating each grimy corner and I really should be doing a thorough spring-cleaning. I can’t even think of writing a column for The Sun Runner.  Oh Lord, where to start? I don’t know, but there is a very interesting looking book beckoning me.
