Poetry by Elise Kost, Joshua Tree

you choose

free yourself, sister!

your strength will carry you,

your trust will belay you

and guide you to your next step –

to another window of Truth,

of the mirror you turn from

cuffed

onto matter over mind.

free yourself Today, sister

(the chains are within)

pass on the collar, girl,

stand up taller

and let the wind sing through you

let it sink into your shaking hamstrings,

your legs alive

and the silence inside.

the arms tearing,

stretching for a grip

on this thing called “freedom.”

…maybe to admit

falling

is floating

is growing….

the key, just being

is easier than it sounds, seems –

breathe your relief,

…love reaches, for us each.

-elise kost

religion reinvented

like the paper cup

sipped by lips after lips

leaks,

like the prophet’s pocket

picked for a bigger space

on the porch of grace,

old divinity

folded over and over

tends to crease.

earth and man

once…

there was no separation of

earth and man

harmony was necessary.

then came the storm of

church and state

systemized judgments of actions, thoughts, emotions -

everything organized into

love…, or hate.

people stopped tasting their food

numbness grew, like a plague.

awareness became commerce, politics, “waste management,”

every moment planned.

then, people began

trading freedom for fear.

…trading endangered lion, wolf, elk, bear territory

for cattle ranching.

…trading

red mountain blood for strip mining

forests of oxygen for clear cutting

Mother ocean for oil drilling.

…trading conscience – consciousness for what

“people” think

for what “they” say -

allowing “them” to discern

where to end….where to begin…..

…trading just enough for everyone

for more and more and more

for some.

so, when i feel a “law” clawing in

i feel the need to

block it, break it, taste it -

climb up the highest mountain

and shout from my soul, stomach, wounds :

“there are no walls to hide behind

no definitions

no rules

no giving up

no weakness

WE ARE FREE !

we are whom we choose to be.

…there is no wrong along the path

of harmony.”

…and this illusion of time

has us climbing over each other.

busy busy minds choosing

not to realize (real eyes)

that there is no box

to think outside of.

there is no box to Think outside of.

we are whom we choose to be.

and what we see and sculpt

of each day, each moment, each creation

can only be as good

as the pulp

of our own

imagination.

Elise Kost of Joshua Tree has been writing since her fingers could wrap around a pencil. She began with stories of princesses and swamps, always with a moral at the end. After six years of studying philosophy, psychology, and feminist studies in universities in Washington and Oregon, Elise chose to live on the road for nearly four years, traveling throughout the country from coast to coast, giving spoken word performances and selling her five self-published books. Having camped through most of her travels, this journey greatly inspired her reverence of the natural world and influenced her environmentally and politically toned writing to encourage life awareness in her readers and listeners.
