8pm: DENVER! free show

April 14, 2013

This “Ramshackle All-Star Country Band” fashions itself a sort of modern-day Highwaymen. DENVER’s co-founders and chief songwriters Birger Olsen, Mike Elias and Tom Bevitori (Alela Diane’s Wild Divine) exchange lead vocals, swaying drunk- enly between dusty saloons and that lonesome country air. The band has since filled out its line-up with a stellar supporting cast, which includes Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley and Michael Van Pelt, drummer Sean MacNeil, and a rotating crew of Portland’s finest.

“Drums in the living room, singer in the bedroom, four-track cassette recorder, cases of beer, whiskey, sandwiches and a sunny porch,” is how Olsen sums up recording Denver’s self-titled debut. Out August 14th from Mama Bird Recording Co., the record was recorded and engineered at a friend’s mother’s house by Earley and Van Pelt, and mixed by Mike Coykendall (M. Ward, She&Him, Blitzen Trapper).

"Not sure if Denver is an Americana supergroup masquerading as a barely under control drinking party, or the other way around, but who gives a rat’s sweet patootie as long as they deliver the good." - My Old Kentucky Blog

“So well-infused with country grit that you can almost taste the pipe tobacco and bootleg whiskey.

Sweet harmonies and tight arrangements abound.” - KEXP

“It's basically a parade of really fine talent at any given moment.” - Kin
