for "Steel Magnolias"

The all new theatre group, The St. Joseph's Players in Yucca Valley has chosen a new debut production, and is auditioning prospective cast members. After having cast the original debut choice "On Golden Pond", a key cast member's illness has led director, Rebecca Havely, to postpone producing the play. Robert Harling’s popular "Steel Magnolias" has been chosen as the new debut production.

The all-female-cast show is a bittersweet comedy-drama that is close to director Havely's heart; she played the role of Shelby in her home town of Saginaw, MI in her 20's. Havely studied theater in Michigan and later in New York City at The American Musical & Dramatic Academy. She has directed and performed in several successful local productions, most recently directing "Lost in Yonkers" at Theatre 29. She has been nominated by the Desert Theatre League for its Best Director award for Groves Cabin Theatre’s production of "Wit" and for the Hi-Desert Cultural Center's Blak Box production of "Crimes of the Heart", and she won the DTL Best Director of a Drama award when she co-directed "Another Day in Baghdad" at the Blak Box. The St. Joseph's Players have joined the Desert Theatre League; their productions will be eligible for DTL Desert Star Awards.

Auditions for "Steel Magnolias" will be held on Sun. April 21st at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph of Arimathea Church, 56312 Onaga Trail in Yucca Valley (corner of Onaga Tr. & Church St.). There is no need to prepare material as you will be reading from the provided script. Actors will be asked to use a Southern dialect, as the play is set in Louisiana. If you would like the scenes that will be auditioned, you may find them on Facebook; if you request to be Facebook friends with director Rebecca Havely, she will accept your request and direct you to the scenes. You may also contact Havely by email at to receive the script pages.

There are six female characters in the play. The roles are:

TRUVY JONES: Age 30's or 40's. The fun-loving, wise-cracking owner of the beauty shop where all the action of the play takes place.

ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO: Age 20ish. The eager, nervous and quirky new beauty shop assistant with a checkered past.

SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE: Age 20's. She’s the prettiest girl in town. Determined and strong despite her physical weaknesses as a severe diabetic.

M'LYNN EATONTON: Age 40ish. Shelby's mother, a socially prominent career woman. She keeps her emotions in check and her lips locked when it comes to the salon gossip.

OUISER (pronounced "Weezer") BOUDREAUX: Age 50's or 60's. This curmudgeon is brash and bossy, but still loveable.

CLARIEE BELCHER: Age 60's-80's. Widow of the former Mayor, the town's Grande dame. Best buddies with Ouiser.

Rehearsals will be most weeknights from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. starting May 1. Performances of the show will be all four Fri. & Sat. evenings plus two Sun. matinees in July. All female actresses from 18 to 80 available for these dates are encouraged to audition. Those interested in helping backstage with lights, sound, costumes, or props are also invited to attend. The group is non-professional, so all will be volunteering their time and talent.

Tickets to the intimate 50 seat theater will be $8.00 - $10.00. To reserve tickets, please leave a message on the Church answering machine by calling 760-365-7133. If performing is not for you, please support this new theater group by coming to see their very first show!
