Palm Desert – You’ll tap your toes and laugh your socks off when renowned banjo picker (and Hollywood funnyman) Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers open the McCallum’s 25th Anniversary Season on Friday, August 31, at 8:00pm. Grammy nominees and winners of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers will play all of their hits. When asked what hits they will play, Mr. Martin responded, “We don’t have any hits. It’s bluegrass!”

In the roughly three years since Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers have been touring together, they have delighted audiences at Bonnaroo, New Orleans’ Jazzfest and The Newport Folk Festival, to name a few. They’ve embarked on four widely acclaimed tours with many critics noting Martin’s “exceptional musicianship.” The Orange County Register said “what’s so heartening and wonderful to see is Steve Martin back on stage, doing both things he does best – playing banjo and being funny.”

Their 2011 album Rare Bird Alert has received a Grammy® nomination for Best Bluegrass Album and critical acclaim. The album features 13 new Martin-penned tracks, including a live version of “King Tut,” and special guest vocals from Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks. Martin co-wrote two songs from the album with the Steep Canyon Rangers. His 2010 release, The Crow / New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, won a Grammy® for Best Bluegrass Album.

Steve Martin is one of the most diversified performers in the motion picture industry today—actor, comedian, author, playwright, producer and musician. He has been successful as both writer and performer in some of the most popular movies of recent film history. Since becoming involved in the modern bluegrass scene, Martin has been impressed with the overall level of musicianship that exists in the world of the professional and semi-professional player. As such, in 2010, Martin established The Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, an annual award which brings recognition to an individual or group for outstanding accomplishment in the field of five-string banjo or bluegrass music.

Steve Martin is a four-time Grammy® winner, including The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, which won Best Bluegrass Album in 2009. In addition, he won for his collaboration with Earl Scruggs on Foggy Mountain Breakdown (2001), and two for comedy albums Wild and Crazy Guy (1978) and Let’s Get Small (1977).

This tour in support of Rare Bird Alert comes on the heels of a banner year that saw Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers winning ‘Entertainer of the Year’ at the 2011 International Bluegrass Association Awards.
