Advanced Map and Compass
Desert Institute Survival Skill Course

Description:

Hone your route-finding ability with navigation specialist, Theresa Walsh, in this all-day advanced map and compass field class. Under Walsh’s expert guidance, participants will plan their cross-county route for the day taking into consideration land features, terrain, points of interest, and ease of travel. The class will then follow the path of their choice through the desert wilderness. Along the way, Walsh will discuss advanced navigation techniques including triangulation as well as the ecology of the area. Participants will experience the thrill having their planned route unfold over the landscape during the day. The class will travel approximately eight miles with some boulder scrambling. This is a great opportunity to practice charting a course through Joshua Tree National Park to locate specific rock formations and historical landmarks. Prerequisite Map & Compass Basic Skills or prior map and compass abilities. Please call with any questions.

Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, this field seminar meets at Quail Springs Picnic Area, Joshua Tree National Park, CA on Sunday, September 23, 8:30 am – 5 pm.
