Description:

Over 140 species of lichens occur in Joshua Tree National Park. Several species new to science have been recently discovered. However, these ubiquitous organisms are commonly overlooked. This introductory class will give you a basic understanding of lichen biology and ecology in desert habitats. Kerry Knudsen, Curator of Lichens at the Herbarium of the University of California, Riverside, and a lichen taxonomist, has spent over 100 days inventorying the lichens of Joshua Tree National Park. Two and a half hours of entertaining lectures in the morning will give an introduction to lichens. You will learn about the most common genera and species found in Joshua Tree as well as about the rarest species in the park. You will learn about all the species new to science. The remaining part of the day will be spent in the field, looking at lichens on rock, junipers, and in soil crusts. You will need a hand-lens (10X) and you will want to have a camera for photographing Joshua Tree’s beautiful lichen mosaics.
